Clean Up Day  2008

Highland Lakes Cleanup Day

Another successful Clean-up Day is in the books.  We had 27 people come out to help pick up the debris and litter that finds its way to our roadsides every year, and what is amazing is that most of us are mature folks that are giving back to the earth.  Where are the teenagers??  We did have some youngsters help out (which is great to see that parents, grandparents and friends are teaching them to be considerate stewarts of the earth).

There was lots of glass (mostly liquor bottles-are drinkers really so uncaring as to throw the bottles into the woods?), plastic, paper, and aluminum picked up along with not so common items – metal pipes, a mattress, toys, pieces of rugs, a bag of tobacco, tires and sadly the foot of a bear – yes the bear claw – was it killed illegally and then the killer threw the foot off onto the roadside?  If not, why was it there?

I cannot say enough about the people who come out each year for Clean-up Day.  They unselfishly give their time and energy to make the lakes a cleaner place for all of us.  Please thank them next time you see them.

They are:

Wayne Redyke               Tine Stevens

Janet Redyke                  Tucker Stevens

Barbara Jaggi                  Cody Stevens

Herb Carlough                Kayla Stevens

It’s time to get ridof all the debris that has collected on the roads all winter and the date is Saturday, April 26th at 10:00 AM until noon (or longer if you’d like).  We will meet on the clubhouse porch to sign in and then you either tell us the road (s) you want to clean or we can direct you to an area in need of cleaning.

We need to know where you will be so that we all don’t head to the same spot and we also need to know where to pick up the trash at the end of the day.  We will supply the cleanup bags; you supply the food, will and energy.

Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and work gloves, fill the bags with whatever you find along the roads and leave them right there.  The bags will be picked up.

The Ecology Committee thanks you for giving your time to help keep our lakes and land clean.  Remember, every piece of trash you pick up is one that will not end up in our lakes.

Mark you calendars, April 26th at 10:00 AM to noon.  See you then.

Spring is on the way and with spring coming we are thinking about our Spring Clean-up Day.  The date is next month, April 26th, Saturday, from 10AM until noon.  Mark it on your calendars.  There will be more information in the April Newsette.  Please plan to come out and help your community.

The Ecology Committee is also asking for volunteers from Lakes #1, #3, #4 and #5 to help out with keeping an eye on all of our lakes.  If you are willing to help, come to the monthly Ecology Meeting (the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7PM – March 13th is the next one) and help us keep our lakes and land clean.
