Fleet Racing Sailors  at Eckhart Sailing Center

Tube Sail Storage!

Sue Buruchian 7420   4burufam@warwick.net

It is with great pleasure and combined efforts that I report to the HL Sailing Fleets that our Sail Storage Tubes will be available for fleet racing sailors at Eckhart Sailing Center commencing the start of this season.  There will be 15 individual tubes which are individually lockable and sized to handle Sunfish, Force 5, Comet, Windsurfer or Catamaran sails.  Interested sailors of any fleet docked at ESC in HL are available to contact us for this upcoming seasons use.  Junior sunfish sailors should immediately apply.

A hold harmless release form is being developed and must be signed prior to use.  Once the release form is developed and confirmed, it will be distributed accordingly.

Please note the benefit for this Sail Storage System continues.  Please plan on attending the Sailors Brunch on June 29th to help this effort.

The Club has been kind and supportive enough to  help us get this program up and running prior to the season, but still needs our help to fulfill our benefit requirements.

You’ll be glad you attended with Ralph Terra’s talent, great offerings of brunch food and camaraderie among all HL members- The Sailors Brunch is a hot ticket!

In the meantime, please contact Sue Buruchian @7420 (4burufam@warwick.net) for more detailed information on the Sail Storage availability and your particular interest.

I cannot end this article without thank you’s particularly to our Club Manager, Jack McLaughlin, the entire HL Voting Board and HL Maintenance, especially, Jim Zabrieski and Tom and Ellen Buchney who donated their boat rack spot for this effort.

Junior Singles "No Small Fleet!”

Sue Buruchian Fleet Captain

This past Wednesday's race was no small feat to win.  Five competitive boats challenged each other with good winds, crazy starts (ahem, John Wayne) and terrific fun.  Robert Randazzo sailing sunfish Ladies Fleet Captains, Irene Boaren's boat, showed up perfect style and grace as he had a fabulous start way windward which proved useful later on.  Matt Russell taking the port side of the line lead up the first leg only to be caught by Max Shriner who also showed excellent technique.  Carolyn Abrams, the only lady on the lake today, was in perfect form throughout.  These kids knew they were 'moving on up' with today's fine finishes and all enjoyed the results.  John Wayne Wisnewski tacked skill to edge out Robert on the last tacks. Congratulations to all!  It all was very well sailed and that's no small fleet! J

Results were:

1- John Wayne Wisniewski

2- Rob Randazzo

3- Max Shriner

4- Carolyn Abrams

5- Matt Russell

Junior Doubles  " New Sails, New Leaders!”

Sue Buruchian Fleet Captain

Fridays race again proved difficult to schedule for many of the junior sailors.  Some off to football, soccer or other commitments, made this race special for the four that raced.  There was a blessing from nature as we rigged our boats as a mature bald eagle soared over our heads at Eckhart Sailing Center.  They are beautiful and it took our breath away!

Onto the racing where Jessie Lawrence/Kelly Staso dawned new sails and a racing centerboard.  Awesome.  she led the first two marks being challenged by Steve/Jessie Castiglione.   Dan Castiglione and Vickie Zaccaria showed great form downwind by sailing their own race and not just following those ahead.  This proved timesaving in the end.  Nicely done!  Max Shriner and Jan Reynolds demonstrated great upwind moves working simultaneously as a team.  Well done to this new team of racers!

Congratulations to Steve/Jessie Castiglione for their impressive tactical win over the Lawrence/Staso team on the last leg of the race.

Race results:

1- S. Castiglione/J. Castiglione

2- J. Lawrence/ K. Staso

3- M. Shriner/J. Reynolds

4- D. Castiglione/ V. Zaccaria

Junior Singles: 8/15  'Luck be the Lady"

August 15 presented some interesting sailing for the juniors.  The winds were heavy and shifty with 2 juniors flipping prior to the race.  Alex and Meredith being the twins they are, gave us a show simultaneously flipping almost cue with the big breeze.

Once up and sailing, they handled with winds well.  Meredith showed her endurance and skill with another righting of her boat but finished with determination.  Thanks to the safety boat for the assistance they gave.

The real lady of the day however, went to Emily Wisnewski.  This was her last race as a junior sailor which did bring tears to the eyes of the fleet captain and race committee.  She's now eligible to be one of the Thursday Ladies Sunfish fleet and Irene Boeran gladly welcomes her. She sailed a beautiful race ending up her junior career.  We will miss you Emily!

Finishes were:

1. W. Kresic

2. JW Wisnewski

3. R. Randazzo

4. E. Wisnewski

5. C. Abrams

Junior Doubles 8/17  'Where did the wind go?"

This Friday there were grand winds right up to start of the race.  And then, the reflections of each boat could be seen for yards to come.  It was one of those painful race.  There is nothing worse than a drifter in the sun.  Endurance in a drifter is the the worst way to sail.  Special thanks to my husband, Mark who helped me with covering the race and special aiding to Dan Castiglione.

Results were:

1. S. Buruchian/A. Kresic

2. W. Kresic/R. WIsnewski

3. C. Abrams/C. Marcellari

4. M. Shriner/J. Reynolds

5. M. Russell/M. Kresic

FRIDAY AFTER RACE EVENT 8/24:  Video at Club for those interested.  Contact Fleet captain

Wed - 8/1   "Follow Me"

Will Kresic showed us all how to lead the pack.  This day presented heavy shifty winds especially at the start where Dan Castiglione and Robert Hand both flipped.  They got themselves up and going in no time but the winds really had these kids going strong.  Cameron Siss tried his hand at sailing this day as well and swears he'll be back now that he knows what a centerboard is!  Good going to all.

Top 3 finishers were:

1-Will Kresic

2-Shannon Buruchian

3-Emily Wisniewski

Fri- 8/3   "Flip and Find"

Nine boats came out to race on this hot Friday.  These sailors are really getting it now and are in full swing. Many were 'on the line' at the start presenting some interesting port/starboard situations as soon as the horn went off.  The full course one left us all a little concerned when the wind seemed to go a sabbatical around the island.  Not to worry however as the race continued, and once all the kids finished, they were rewarded with the 'now flip your boat!" command from the Fleet captain.  All juniors flipped and rerighted their respective boats with ease.  Practice makes perfect!  Thanks to Patrick Eckhart and Kevin Abrams for keeping my secret that we were going to have these kids do this 'surprise flipping drill'!  By the way, it's not too hard to convince these kids they have to get wet on a hot summer day!

After the race, our Junior Captains of Will Kresic and Steve Castiglione arranged a great scavenger hunt.  Well received by all, the boaters had to 'get to' five locations using their boats.  They could paddle, swim, rock and roll anyway they wanted to 'get the clues'.  I heard the winners were Alex Kresic and Matt Russell with great form of paddling, swimming and running.  Here were the clues and see if you can find the locations:

1 Raise  your dagger board and prepare for a landing where this late summer fruit thrives on an island with its name.

2- Travel to the docks where the comets are at rest.

3- 8X50

4- Across from Eckhart, around many islands, sand calls to many three year olds; let it call to you.

5- The rocky shores by two docks, at a popular launch site you will find your last clue.

(Locations on next posting)

Great times had by all!

Top Five Race Finishers were:

1.Will Kresic/Wisnieski

2.John Wayne Wisniewski/Wisniewski

3.Max Shriner/Shriner

4.Matt Russell/Kresic

Wed 7/25:   Singles

This past Wed, our Junior Fleet raced with nice winds on a full course #1 for the first race. Some got around the island faster than others but all had a great time.  There were some great impressions left from the racing;  Shannon 'rocked' with 2 firsts, Jennifer Reynolds finished her first time as skipper, Dan C. showed his is a contender, Robert showed us all you really should have a mainsheet-it's much easier to sail with it and not to be forgotten, Alex showed us how 'not' to dock a boat.

Races are 11: start.  Those coming off ESC, try to be 'on the water' by 10:55 - we all have things to do after the races.

Thanks kids!

Two races were sailed for the makeup of the cancelled race, results were:

Race 1/Race 2

1- S. Buruchian/ S. Buruchian

2. J. Wisnewski/ W. Kresic

3. W. Kresic/ J. Wisnewski

7. R. Randazzo/R. Randazzo

8. S. Castiglione/M. Shriner

9. D. Castiglione/J. Lawrence

Friday 7/27:  Doubles   "Just dock in here...."

Fridays race was beautiful to watch as that is what I had to do. I was busy at the Clubhouse doing the "B" sales but got to watch you all from the patio.   Nice going.  You all seemed to enjoy the full course 1 and downwind at the dam marked proved interesting for some. Special thanks to our Safety Boat who always is there in a pinch!  (Pat, Kevin, Dan, Carrie…..you guys are the best!) Secondly for Maryann Lawrence doing Race Committee for the day.  Great going and thanks for 'stepping up' - no pun intended- glad to see your foot doing better!   Her report included the creative docking techniques we seem to be experiencing.  So we are going to be working on that next week for sure!   Some notables from the race are certainly: Jessie/Cassie moving on up, Kevin/Mike- consistant as always, Max with brother, Jake and welcome back to the other 'family team' Peter and Alissa Giannini!  Hope to see you every week!    Those coming off ESC dock, please try to be 'on the water' by 11:25 or sooner for the 11:30 start.

After Race Event for this Friday:  SCAVENGER HUNT- wear your suits and plan extra time after the race.

Lessons Learned: Docking

You must be 'into the wind" to dock your boats and approach at a slow speed.  In other words, let out your sail upon turning into the wind and your boat will slow down.  Your boat should be parallel to the dock.  In the event, you have to reach a dock from a difficult angle, it is best to stay 'into the wind' (letting your sails flutter) and use your rudder as a source of paddling by swinging it back and forth to get you to the dock.  You should never come full speed straight into any dock.

Junior Sunfish  Fleet- S. Buruchian Fleet Captain------------------------------------------------

Singles: 7/17

The junior singles race was cancelled this week due to threating lighting on radar. Two races will be sailed this coming Wed to makeup this race.  Remember, cancellations when questionable weather is around, will be phoned into the HL Hotline, put on the web site junior page and will, when available, and placed in the sailing board.  Cancellations are made by the Race Committee and Fleet captain(s) based on radar at 10: AM on race day.  We do our best to try to sail and read the radar. Thank you all for your cooperation.  If there isn't a message, your are sailing!  Sails up and go!  We can sail in the light rain however; extreme conditions are not fun for anyone.

Doubles:  7/20   "Which way is it blow' in…?

The Junior Doubles have been blessed with great wind.  10 boats readied their sails with high shifty winds at hand.

Just getting the kids off the Eckhart sailing dock this day was a feat.  As the starting series commenced, Carolyn Abrams

showed us all how easy it is to flip in these conditions.  Once righted with the safety boats help- thanks John Ross, I miscued the horns by deleted the countdown.  See, nobody is perfect!   A restart was generated with all the boats up and off the docks a good 25 minutes later.  Now the race….

Will Kresic, in his brand new sunfish, showed how fast new sails and a sparkling new hull can move.  Flawless.  He and his crew, Grant, won the race as he continuously increased his lead with a 1/4 leg spread at the finish.  Nice focus Will.

These winds were challenging for all and quite honestly, finishing was a win as far as the dock committee was concerned.  The shifts made the called "course 3" a multitude of variations of a "2" and "1" you get the picture.  Hike out, get in, tack this way, no, tack that way…yeks!  Boom!   All juniors should be very proud of your increasing abilities to handle these winds. Nice going. Special shout out to Jennifer Reynolds who finished her first race as a skipper!   Additionally, to Mr. & Mrs. Reynolds who gave quickie sailing lessons to the Gallagher family children who are interested in starting to sail.  Thanks guys, you were great!

Finishes were:

  1. W. Kresic/G. Wisnewski
  2. J. Wisnewski/R. Wisnewski
  3. S. Buruchian/Molly Siss*
  4. S. Castiglione/J. Castiglione
  5. J. Lawrence/Erica Brierley*
  6. M. Shriner/D. Castiglione
  7. P. Morton/G. Hand
  8. J. Reynolds/M. Coyle
  9. M. Russell/ M. Kresic
  10. C. Abrams/C. Voag

*= New sailor/crew

Lessons learned this week

1-Can you flip and keep racing?  Yes.  Once up righted without aide, you can continue to race.

2-Can I get help from the safety boat and still continue to race and be scored?  Yes, but you will be scored a "DNF/DSQ" if you can't continue or if you do continue to sail, you will be scored a "DNF/DSQ".  If you have the safety boat aid you in any fashion by holding your boat, helping you re-right you boat, getting back in, etc, you are considered 'out of the race'.  The job of the safety boat and lifeguards is simple; your safety. If you are not in need of help or want to try to help yourself without aid, you can request them not to touch or aid you until you ask so you can continue to race and be scored. However, any safety issue dictates they will aid you.  A towed boat is a DNF/DSQ.

This week Friday Activity:  Scavenger Hunt - plan extra time after race.

------------------------------

Race notice:  Unfortuately, as of 10AM impending radar shows lighting which would hit the lake area around 11:.  Therefore,

the Jr. Singles race for Wed. 7/17 is cancelled.  Two races will be held next week.

--------------------------------------------

Starboard boat! 7/13

Yes, the first singles race of the season proved interesting. With 10 juniors ready to sail.

These kids have 'worked there way up the ropes' and were ready for the winds at hand.

Great  racing. Two races sailed to do a makeup for last weekends cancellation of bad weather.

Carolyn Abrams and Matt Russell sailed the exact speed for a large portion

Of  the lake to always end up in center with a port/starboard situation.  Not once, not twice but almost

5  times.  Talk about consistent sailing.  Meredith Kresic gave it her best effort in all the wind but it

Was her big brother, Will who showed us all how to win the first race in heavy air.   The second race

Was lead the entire way by Shannon Buruchian.  You go girl! Not to be missed was a great finish for Steve Gastiglione.

It was a nice day for sailing a full course one in heavy air:  C lose behind the first place boats were:

Race1/ Race 2

1/2 Will Kresic

2/3 John Wayne Wisnewski

3/1 Shannon Buruchian

4/4 Emily Wisnewski

5//9 Steve Castiglione

6//7 Max Shriner

7/5 Carolyn Abrams

8/6 Robert Randazzo

9/8 Matt Russell

10/0Meredith Kresic

0/10 Alex Kresic

Doubles Racing is a blast, especially with wind! 7/13

These junior teams love wind.  It's easier to sail, easier to correct mistakes and yes, simply, you go fast- and that's fun!  With double the weight in these sunfish, mother nature provided a day of fun and frolic for the juniors. The starts are getting better! Tacking is taking on meaningful definition! And another great part of HL junior sailing is a 'catch crew' like Matt Pellet. He was just swimming on his dock near Eckhart Sailing Center when one of our crews didn't make it.  Well, I asked and he jumped right in.  Don't you just love the spirit of these kids?  Go for it!  Thanks Matt again for helping us out and hope you had a nice time!  Come again!

John Wayne Wisnewski using a newer hull showed us his transom throughout the race.  With his cousin Grant as his crew, they finished with ease in the heavy air followed by the top 4 who were shortly on their way to the SANJL regatta the next day!  It should be noted that Will leading the race until they flipped on the last upwind leg to help John Wayne catch up- but that's sailing!   The middle of the fleet negotiated the tactical problems going around the island can provide to make the mark but isn't that's HL sailing?   Ice pops and sailing race reviews after the race proved good for all as we all were hot from all the sun and fun!

Results were:

1-John Wayne Wisnewski/Grant Wisnewski

2-Shannon Buruchian/Alex Kresic

3-Will Kresic/Robbie Wisnewski

4-Carolyn Abrams/Cristina Voag

5-Steve Castiglione/Jessica Castiglione

6-Matt Russell/ Meredith Kresic

7-Max Shriner/Dan Castiglione

8-Jessie Lawrence/Kelly Stasso

9-Kevin Acker/ Mike Sweeney

10-Jennifer Reynolds/Matt Pellet

And They're Off!

Sue Buruchian, Jr. SF Fleet Captain

On Friday, July 6, our Junior SF sailors started there summer series.

Sails were full and colorful as they negotiated the course #1- full course.

Yes, full course, what a way to start the season.  These juniors are up to

the task this year as they are all improved and have their respective sea legs

right off the bat.

Congratulations go out to new teams of Jennifer Reynolds as skipper and her crew, Mirah

Coyle.  Also, new comer, Max Schriner and his crew, Ryan McCotter.  These both

deserve a extra hand of support.

The race was exciting with some nice lead changes to an after the first two marks.

Everyone was taken into the right shore going to the dam mark - watch it next time, and

don’t' go so deep in there kids!  Downwind proved fun for all with some interesting tactics

in order to find that buoy at the other side of the island.  And yes, Patrick, you must round

the entire buoy. J

Will Kresic proved victorious on this first race edging out Shannon Buruchian right at

End. Excellent focus Will!   A notable finish was Matt Russell in 5th. Nice going!

Ice Cream was had by all after the race with a short meeting.  Jr. Fleet Captain for the

Doubles Is Will Kresic.   Interesting plans are in the works for these fun sailors!

Welcome Junior  Sunfish Sailors!

S. Buruchian Jr. Fleet Captain 7420

Are you getting ready for a fun filled season with lots of sailing activity this year? Well, get ready!

Jot down these dates for reference and future use First off,  THE SAILORS BRUNCH.  Sun, July 1st .  Should be fun, ask your families to attend this benefit brunch which  will help YOU, Junior Sailors, as the benefit monies are directed to installing sail storage at the Eckhart Sailing Center! Yes, no more carrying of your sails down to the starting line!  What a concept!

But, we need your help.  Come to the brunch!

Secondly, our Season starts on July 4.  It will be a great way for you all to 'get out there' and have fun!  The schedule can be found on the HL web site of www.hlcc.org   Click Athletics, then Junior SF Fleet for weekly articles and special notes as well.   Of course, it will be noted in the Newsette as well.  We will race on Wed for Junior SF Singles (11:00 am start)  and Fridays will be the Jr. SF Doubles (11:30 start).  You should be rigged, in the water and ready to start by those times.  As always, we look forward to a great summer of fun and competitive racing on HL.  If you haven't contacted  Frank Henninger or I regarding a dock space at ESC for the racing juniors, please do so ASAP.

New sailor to join us?  Great!  Bring your life jacket and a great attitude and we'll hook you up. If you have a sunfish, rig it and come on down. We try our best to get all juniors who want to sail 'out there'.  I hate having a willing spirit watching from the dock!  So, come on down to Eckhart Sailing Center on race time and days.

Friday July 6th after race event:  Ice Cream Party.  We will be electing our Jr. Captains for the season, giving out T's and reviewing all the opportunities this summer for you to sail!  All future after race events will be posted on the sailing board/web and announced on the sailing Friday for the following week.

A couple  of reminders for you to review and check;  you should have the following items to be ready to sail:

Equipment:  hull, plugs (if applicable), tiller, mainsheet, centerboard, rudder, rudder pin (if applicable), centerboard bungee, tiller extensions (if removable) and each sailor should have access to:

U.S.C.G. approved life jacket (required) with water whistle securely attached (highly recommended)

Hat , sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle (with water in it!), Dress appropriately for the weather, Starting Watch with countdown timer, Course sheet in a zip lock bag.  (New sailors, bring a bag, we'll provide the course sheet)

Remember, it gets hot out there!  Please remember the importance of protecting yourselves from the sun – including wearing hats, sunglasses and sunscreen – and protecting yourselves from dehydration. It is important to be drinking water before you feel thirsty.  If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

The schedule can be found on the HL web site of www.hlcc.org , click Athletics then Junior SF Fleet for weekly articles and special notes as well.   Of course, it will be noted in the Newsette as well.  As always, we look forward to a great summer of fun, competitive junior racing on HL.

Junior Sunfish "Travel Sailing Team" Competitors:  (ahem…all of you can do this)

Listed below is the Regatta information for the SANJL JR. Sunfish Championship series. The dates to reserve are:

July 14- Mountain Lakes

Aug 4- Hunterdon/Spruce Run Reservoir

Aug 18-Smoke Rise

Please note the Aug 4 date conflicts with the Bi-Annual Steinmann and Territory III Championship Comet Regatta being hosted

By HL this summer.  If you are a Comet sailor as well, you may have to make a decision here.   You can still do well sailing 2 of the above regattas in the overall standings if you have a good first regatta.  More details available at: http://www.sunfishclass.org/midatlantic/sanjl/

Some final reminders for all HL sailors as we start the season:

- No tying up to racing buoys.

  • If you hear thunder get off the lake and if need be go to the closest dock.
  • Racing sailboats have right of way.
  • All Junior racers must wear their PFD.
  • No boating between a float and the shoreline.
  • Register with the Race Committee for each race with    your sail number/crew.
  • Must stay clear of the finish line after you finish. A re-cross is a DSQ!
  • We use the 3 minute dingy start series ( 3min, 2min, 1min, 30sec, 20sec,10sec, Start)
  • All boaters should follow US Boat Safety rules and regulations.
  • And if you boat/sail at night, please note, over water your voices travel easily.  Keep it quiet!
  • So, that's the plan in an nutshell.  Looking forward to all of you hiking out hard and going fast downwind!

2006 JUNIOR  SUNFISH  SEASON RECAP:

Sue Buruchian, Fleet Captain

What a great season we had!  It was fun, challenging and competitive. Listed below are the final results of our fabulous Junior Sunfish Fleet.  We had fun in summary with "Ice Cream Fridays" , "Crazy Hat Day",  "Flipping Friday" , "Sailing Football",  "Mother Natures Warning ", "Brad Funk Day", "Starters Lessons-the one boat length" and for the truly fortunate…..'Racing away from 'home'".  Overall, it was a spectacular season with lessons learned all around including a few rules tested.   Well done, kids!

Congratulations to the following special awards:

Most Improved Junior Doubles Sailor

Steve Castiglione     (Pick up your perpetual trophy at the Buruchians!)

Trophies went 7 deep in both divisions; so if you didn't get yours, call us 973-764-7420!

Also, although there were no “official trophies” for the Midget division this year (not sure how that happened), again, I like to highlight these sailors again.  Well done!

Top 5 Midget Sailors: (those under 14)

2- Shannon Buruchian
