Summer Reading Program

Member Volunteers!

A child’s summer in HLCC can be fairly busy and stressful!  There are so many things to do.  When a child wakes up in the morning, he has to plan out his day.  He has to go to baseball practice, he wants to play cards with his friends, he is interested in playing pool, he wants to go to the movie night, he definitely has to go to the beach (after all he is so close to being able to dive), he may even begin plotting how to annoy his sister.

Probably the last thing that a child thinks about when he wakes up is reading.  Reading!?!?!  In the summer?!?!?!  Whoever even heard of that!

At first glance, our summer reading program may not seem to be the up and coming activity.  However, it has certain qualities that the pool room and beach do not.  It is held in a cool and calm area, the Lake Room.  It is held at 4:00 in the afternoon, after all main sports, games, practices, swim lessons are over.  It is held twice a week, on Monday and Thursday so kids don’t have to participate every single day but they also don’t have to wait a whole seven days for the next one.

Like many other activities, our reading program is run by volunteers.  These volunteers have a certain love for reading that they enjoy sharing with others.  How nice for parents to be able to have someone read to their children.  Even better, how nice for parents to be able to come and take a break and read to their own children.  Still better, how nice for a child (many of whom secretly enjoy reading and using their imaginations) to become immersed in a good book!  Come check it out during the summer!
