Tennis in Highland Lakes

2007

The tennis season opened with Team Tennis organized play in May and we anticipate a steady participation into the month of October.  During the season we have had approximately 40 players from ages 18 to 80.  The new weekly format seems to be enjoyed by all.  We play from 9AM to 11AM Saturday mornings. All are welcome to join the group playing their hearts out in their stylish Team Tennis Blue Shirts.

The tennis Aces are our Highland Lakes players between the ages of 13 and 18.  They meet twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6PM.  They play organized singles and doubles matches.  They have a group of at least a dozen players and they welcome any players who wish to join them.

The children’s lessons have been very successful. The sign up was one of the largest of all our Highland Lakes activities.  The lessons have always been broken down into two groups: ages 6 to 8 year olds and 9 to 12 year olds.  This year we had to go to three sessions: 6 to 8 year olds, 9 to 10 year olds and 11 to 12 year olds. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers we were able to accommodate these children and help them to learn the wonderful game of tennis.

These lessons are free to all children whose families belong to Highland Lakes.  All you need to join is a current badge and a tennis racquet.  We have had approximately 80 children show up for lessons this season.

The four new courts that the Beach 1 project provided have certainly been well used.  We thank the club Manager, the office and Club Staff for their part in supplying us with the needed items to keep all of this going.  We look forward to continued success of our programs and even more participation.

Cathy was her usual organized self. She took our personal measurements into account, and gave out our aqua team shirts. Both the men and women send their thanks to our club house staff for their support. Remember to wear them next Saturday for the group photo!

One of the most exciting matches included Jim Anderson/Keith McCarter (sp) and Chris Dietrick (sp)/Luke Kloza. The crowds came out for this one. Points were fast and long. Luke would send a mean, spinning cross-court shot we all thought was a winner. But, Jim was right on it running it down to send up a high overhead. Ask the players the final score!

This is quite a multi-talented group. I overheard Diane Kelly talking about her bowling and golf. Lyn Kaplan stays in shape working out at the Spa and John Whalen laps the small lake early in the morning. Clem Daly, Sam Levin and Bob Hughes all play golf when they’re not on the tennis courts. What a way to stay healthy!

Do join us on Saturdays from 9-11am. Bring your badges, water and sunscreen. Be prepared for fun, exercise and a chance to meet some really great athletics. Questions: Cathy 3174.

We had another beautiful day where 29 players showed up. It looks like we will be needing two more courts! The Kelly’s, Diane and Danny, took on Elaine and Jeff. Good job Kelly’s! We had another broken string this week; but, Luke Kloza carries two racquets, thank goodness. A big thank you is in order for Sam Levin, who brings the jug of water every week. We all appreciate it. Another thank you is for Dori and her camera. Ellen was in good form playing doubles with Pam Grattan against Liz Holda and Paul Burns. Another doubles match was Pat Sandholm and Pete McGuire against Elaine Kuntz and John Whalen. These were two great double matches on the upper courts. Charlie Furce came down this week. It was great to see him. He had a great match with Sam against Luke and Jim. It was more like the US Open. Two new women joined us this week: Ann and Judy. We are glad to have you two and you both come again. Remember all are welcome. Court #3 Lee and Keith played against Jim and Diane, it was another great match. Court four had Liz and Sam battling hard against Pete and Jeff, it was a real close match.

Remember Lee Eisenberg is running the Labor Day Brunch immediately following tennis play. The cost will be five dollars per person. All players are invited to bring a guest. More details will be announced.

See you Saturday mornings. Remember all are welcome. Any questions please call Cathy at 3174.

Another beautiful day and a great crowd-26 players! First time out: Jim Anderson, Danny Kelly and Ron Rienecker. They all seemed to have practiced all year to be fit as could be. First injury of the season-a slight hamstring pull by Adele Huttner-we hope she is back next week. Elaine brought her daughter-in-law. What a lovely player and our pleasure to have her join the group. Sam and Bob, board members, were on the court scurrying for every point. John and Jerry battled it out on Court #5. Dori brought guest Carol who played with Keith giving Dori and Pete a good run. Another first-30 years of team tennis and this Saturday Jim “popped a string.” He’ll be out looking for a new racquet or a stringer.

Thanks to the club and our new athletic director Alice Harrington-she delivered a new supply of balls to keep us up and running. Welcome Alice. Mark your calendars; we will be having another social after tennis on Labor Day weekend. More details to follow in the newsletter. Lee Eisenberg is “chief.” Remember: all are welcome from 9-11am on Saturday mornings. Just bring your racquet, your badge and your enthusiasm for tennis! Questions: Cathy at 3174. Have a great week. Dori and Cathy

Saturday, June 30

It was ANOTHER beautiful day, boy are we lucky to have one nice Saturday after another. We had a good turnout again; all four courts had players, and even the bench had a couple waiting to jump in. The first match was Jerry Nathan against Pat Wootton (it had to be for old time sake!). Believe it or not Jerry did not hit Pat, which was a first! Bob and Pat were in rare form against Rich and Lee. It looked like a good match.

Two new players, Patty and Carolyn, joined us this week. We welcome them and are glad they joined us.

We had the young against the old on Court #2. Luke and Chris took on Jerry and Lee; the results are not being published because the editor is on the old group side. Court #4 had Keith and Clem teamed up, and what a hard to beat pair they made. Liz and Chris drove up from their real house, which added a lot of competition to all our matches. Pete and Lyn took on Diana and Chris in a match with a lot of long volleys. Elaine and Bob took on Rich and Liz. The match went on past 11am but they kept going.

It was great to see the courts filled with the twenty-two players who showed up this week. It was like it used to be. All are welcome, come one, come all on Saturday mornings from 9-11AM. Any questions call Cathy at 3174.

---------------------------

Our Memorial Day tennis began with a bang!  Fran Chessler played like a tiger.  Jeff, the newcomer, was a welcome addition to the group.  Sam Lewin has perfected his forehand crosscourt angle having returned from an intense weekend at tennis camp.  Chris was late, but made up for it with his speed on the court.  His sister, Liz, will have to prove herself next week.  Adele showed up to play but Cathy said, “She’s not ready to take over”. Keith took a whopping from his father-in-law, but he’ll be back for the challenge next Saturday.  Dori and Elaine brought their humor and skills to our matches. Most players wore their shirts a few were misplaced over the winter.  We were missing about 8 regulars, they were certainly involved in the French Open.  All are welcome from 9AM to 11AM; we play 8 games pro sets with no ad scoring.  This makes for fun and variety for all.  Thanks to George, our umbrella was brought down for the players; thanks to Clem, it was hauled up afterwards.

June 2, 2007 – Our 2nd week of team tennis brought a full house-all 4 courts were in operation.  Lee Eisenberg came out, that tells us that summer is really here,  Irene Boeren and Pat Wootton played against each other looking like Chris Everet and Tracy Austin.  Mark Fiala is back again this year; we want him to drag Ron Renecker down to the courts.  Eb showed up and played as great as always.  Sam wound up with a match against Keith again this week.  Ask them who won…. Adele was noticeably missing.  Liz and Chris came down a little late, but they sure did demonstrate how to compete.  We welcome new player Paul Burns and hope to see him every week.

June 9, 2007 - Clem Daly was the head honcho on Saturday for the team. It was a smaller group but enthusiasm ran high. There were 4 gals and 4 guys hustling for the points. Pat Wootton was wicked in the back court along with Fran Chessler at net. Lyn Kaplan is still queen of the lobs having Eileen Boeren to back her up. Jonathan Kohn was his usual fun-loving self back with all of us. Now we can officially start the summer play. Pete McGuire played effectively with Jeff K   as his partner.

June 16, 2007 - We were back to all 4 courts and a beautiful day. Luke finally got his shirt from last year; hope he gets to wear it before the new ones arrive. Dori had her trusty camera taking pics of all our stars. Finally, “Team Whalen” John  made his appearance in as good form as always. Fran Chessler and Jerry Nathan had quite a singles match on Court 1. Paul was back again playing as hard as ever. Boy can he run!!

June 23rd  A beautiful day, a good turnout and some fun games.  We had some players this week for the first time out this year: Rich Bruenig, Lyn Kaplan and Diane Kelly. Returning from injury was Lee Eisenberg, back in his usual good form.  Noticeably missing was our photographer, Dori. She was playing tennis with her grand children is sunny California.  We only had four women today and lots of men.  Where are our tennis ladies, come on down, we miss you.  Dominic, Sam, Jury and Luke had a great match ending in a tie.  Another good match on Court 4, Bob, Dominic, Paul and Chris, some great volleys.

Remember team tennis is every Saturday morning from 9 to 11 am. All are welcome-be sure to wear your badges. Come on down for some fun. We play 4 different matches and vary the players for each round. There are always a great variety of levels but all have equal fun! Come down and join us. Questions: Cathy at 3174.

Highland Lakes Tennis

Cathy Tansey #3174

Time to dust off those tennis racquets!  We will be having tennis again at the lake on Saturday mornings from 9AM to 11AM.   Play is open to all, wear your badge. Games are set up as fairly as possible.  It is a round robin type format, so you play 3 or 4 different matches each morning.  Our roving photographer, Dori Zarr will be playing again this year.  Jerry Nathan, Lee Eisenberg and all the regulars are expected back.  Looking forward to seeing some new faces this year.  Any questions, feel free to call.  We plan on starting Memorial Day Weekend.
