The Boat at the Clubhouse

A welcoming entrance ....

The flowering rowboat that greets all who enter the “gates” to our Clubhouse is the result of constant gardening.  The planting, watering, weeding, etc., is a continuing volunteer job by Dot Cooper and Dot and Frank Henninger.

The rowboat garden is planted in memory of Joe Mastrangelo, a strong volunteer of HLCC especially in

Sailing and Clubhouse activities.  A sincere “Thank You” to Dot, Dot and Frank for adding a blooming touch of color to our lake.

History of and Memories of "The Boat"

by Bill Busund

"Hi, I never saw the Highland Lakes website until now. I noticed the section "Boat at the Clubhouse Entrance".The boat was originally my father's (Bill Busund) boat. Our family had a cabin on Lakeside Drive for about 29 years, and my dad sold it in 1980 to help pay for my college. A few years after that when I was visiting, I saw the boat. It looked strangely familiar, but had been painted. Then, I saw some of the original dark green come through, and noticed the two tanks on each side of the boat, where we temporarily kept the fish when caught. I imagine my dad got the boat back in the 50's. I read about it in the 1986 Highland Lakes book. I believe it said that the boat was found abandoned in the lake. When we sold the cabin, we left the boat for the buyer. That was the last I saw of it until I observed it at the entrance. I also noticed, when I once went to the rental office at the clubhouse, that there were old postcards tacked to the wall, one of which was of my dad standing at the shore fishing, with my mom sitting behind him on a large tree stump. The photo was taken by another resident, Bucky McDonnell, near beach #4 in the 50's before I was born.  Well, I don't mean to bore anyone with my family's personal past. I was just remembering, and Highland Lakes will always be one of my best memories. Bill Busund"
