Ecology Department: Trees

Carole Fortenbach, Ecology Committee Member

This is a "biggie" folks. The trees in our environment and around our watershed are like gold to the lakes. They not only help to purify the air but they take up excess water so it does not run into the lakes, picking up contaminants on the way. The problem?

Members are cutting down healthy trees at an alarming rate.  Stop!

We are in the country, not the suburbs. We need our trees. Our by-laws recently state that no one is to "cut or remove any standing live timber, except as necessary to carry out building plans." Yet we see members clearly cutting back yards, side yards, and sometimes whole lots.

Trees are important and necessary for our forests and woodlands. You might think one yard will not make a difference but it does; it can cause excessive run-off of rainwater or it can cause the earth to become dry and cracked. Trees keep the soil form eroding and help clean the air. We become biologically sterile when we remove trees-- it is environmental destruction because we are removing that which is needed to protect our watershed. Without a healthy watershed, we won't have healthy lakes.

If you need more clarification on this, come to our Ecology Meetings, which are held every 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM.
