Faster than a speeding bullet! Sails more powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall waves in a single bound! Look! Up on the lake! It’s a bird! It’s planing! It’s Shreddermen! Yes, it’s Shreddermen. Strange windsurfers from another shore who came to Highland Lakes with powers and abilities far behind those of mortal men. Shreddermen, who can change their course on mighty rivers, bend masts in their bare hands, and who, disguised as mild mannered recreational windsurfers for a great metropolitan lake community… fights a never-ending battle for speed, good times and the American wave. (For those of us old enough to remember, can you still the background theme playing in your head?) Yes, now you too can become a Shredderman or Shredderwoman. All you need to do is come out and join in the fun at our Saturday races. The action gets cranked up on Saturday, June 28th and runs every Saturday at 3 PM until the season finale on August 23rd. The only exception is the scratched date on August 16th due to the Sunfish SANJL Regatta. All races start at the Eckhart Sailing Center near Alturas Road on the west shore. The maximum sail size is 9.3 square meters for the Open Fleet and 7.5 square meters for the Sport Fleet. Sail numbers are recommended so that the keen eyes of our dock committee can score you correctly. If you need a number give me a shout. The Sport Fleet is the perfect fit for first time racers. The fleet is designed for both beginner and novice sailors. The courses usually cover a shorter distance than the Open Fleet courses with the emphasis on having FUN while your skills improve. If you are still sitting on the fence about attending a race, we have for those “shredders in training” a Beginner Racing Clinic. It is designed to benefit the novice sailor, young or not so young, through one on one mentoring. An Open Fleet instructor will sail alongside and fine tune the student as they weave their way to the starting line in preparation for a race. The clinics get started at 1:00 p.m.on July 19. Call Chip Ehrhardt at 2125 by 11:00 a.m. on race day to set up a lesson.
